Rainbow Serpent (Version)

Daniel Boyd, is presenting his first major exhibition in Brisbane titled Rainbow Serpent (Version). Developed in collaboration with Gropius Bau in Berlin, this ambitious exhibition explores the legacy of imperialism in the built environment and architectural monuments. Through site-specific installations, participatory programs, paintings and a new commission, Boyd prompts viewers to reconsider their relationship with Eurocentric histories and the spaces they inhabit. Boyd includes ‘(Version)’ in the exhibition title to highlight the nuance and diversity of First Nations’ individual cosmologies, often erroneously generalised by non-First Nations people as ‘Rainbow Serpent’. The body of work also draws on Gestalt’s theory of perception, and uses the writings of poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant as an important theoretical framework. Known for his explorations of Australian-Pacific colonial history, Boyd intertwines science, religion and aesthetics to reveal the construction of political, cultural and personal memory. Boyd’s work continues to captivate audiences and challenge established narratives. Rainbow Serpent (Version) runs from September 9 to December 16, 2023.
