The Churchie Emerging Art Prize 2023

Renowned for profiling and supporting the next wave of contemporary artists, the churchie is one of Australia’s leading prizes for emerging artists. Beginning at Anglican Church Grammar School in 1987, it has been held at Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art since 2019. The churchie offers a $25,000 prize pool, with the overall winner receiving a non-acquisitive $15,000 cash prize. Previous winners include Caitlin Franzmann, Nadia Hernández, Sara Morawetz, Pierre Mukeba, Emily Parsons-Lord, Nina Sanadze and Emmaline Zanelli. Curated by Sebastian Henry-Jones, this year’s finalists’ exhibition spans a variety of media including painting, sculpture, video, drawing, printmaking and photography in an examination of the themes of context, time and place. The finalists’ exhibition runs from until August 19, 2023, with the prize winners announced on Friday June 2, 2023.
