Sentimental Ornaments

Sentimental Ornaments extends upon ceramicist Casey Chen’s practice, referencing historical illustrations from an eclectic mix of folklore, mythology and pop culture. In this new series, Chen layers references to childhood with longstanding East-Asian ceramic traditions – the result is a contemporary expression of the medium and a visual representation of history. Overarchingly, the interplay between images of popular culture and the geometric patterns from traditional sources that Chen fuses into his hand-thrown plates and vessels acts as an homage to the enduring history of Chinese porcelain. Here, the artist plays an active role in fostering a distinctly contemporary expression of this ancient practice. Sentimental Ornaments shows at N.Smith Gallery from December 1 to 23, 2021.
