Love in Bright Landscapes

Love in Bright Landscapes engages the spectre of place, exploring the imagined, iconic and emotive powers of Perth and Los Angeles through the work of artists whose practices engage stories and tales from these two sister cities. Featured artists including Carmen Argote, Jack Ball, Kevin Ballantine, Emma Buswell, George Egerton-Warburton and Teelah George – working across a variety of mediums, including painting, photography, video and sculpture – the artists together explore the dynamic possibilities and pitfalls that may be encountered in gaining an understanding of Los Angeles or Perth as places. Love in Bright Landscapes considers Perth and Los Angeles as comparative case studies, bringing together a selection of artworks made in reference to the characters, qualities and topographies of the two west coast cities. The exhibition’s evocation of love, imbued with the artists’ infatuation for and romanticisation of these two cities, touches on the pervasiveness of lore and myth in the experience of place. Love in Bright Landscapes continues at Perth Institute for Contemporary Art until October 10, 2021.
