New Book By
Romance Was Born

Is there an Australian brand that embodies the relationship between art and fashion as convincingly as Romance Was Born? Since 2005, Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, who famously interned under John Galliano at Christian Dior before starting their own label have garnered a cult following for collections that draw on collaborations with artists –
Nell, Linda Jackson, Del Kathryn Barton, Jenny Kee – who have had a hand in steering the zeitgeist. Then, of course, there are runway shows that meld fashion, music, theatre and unlikely locations. The duo have presented their work everywhere from a Sydney pub to the State Library of New South Wales.

This evolution is captured in Romance Was Born, a new book co-authored by Plunkett, Sales and fashion journalist Georgina Safe, out this May. The 300-page tribute features over 200 photographs chronicling high points in the brand’s trajectory – Romance Was Born’s signature leggings, technicolour dresses and ruffled midi-skirts have been worn by Tavi Gevinson, Sia, Daphne Guinness and Beyoncé herself. Romance Was Born is published by Thames and Hudson.
