Auckland Art Fair

Over the last few years, the Auckland Art Fair has become one of the premier showcases for contemporary art from New Zealand and the Pacific Rim. The fair's last edition, which took place at The Cloud, a light-filled space at the edge of Auckland Harbour, featured standout pieces from over 140 artists including Greer Twiss, Eve Armstrong and Lisa Reihana, whose dazzling video work Emissaries – which skewers Aotearoa's colonial history – debuted at the Venice Biennale in 2017.

This year's instalment of the fair will resume its commitment to exploring the breadth and depth of the art scene thriving in this part of the world. Along with presentations from the likes of Michael Lett, Starkwhite, Hopkinson Mossman, Fox Jensen and Trish Clark, the fair will sharpen its focus on emerging and artist-run spaces with bold curatorial missions. Look out for Mokopōpaki, an up-and-coming Auckland gallery whose approach to exhibition-making stems from Maori values – they plan to show work from Yllwbro, an anonymous brother-sister partnership with an irreverent take on traditional myths and legends. Other highlights include ‘Piki Mai: Up Here', a new section that revolves around early-career artists and incorporates a new work commissioned by cult New Zealand fashion label Deadly Ponies. Auckland Art Fair will open on May 23 at The Cloud on Auckland's Queen's Wharf and run until May 27, 2018. artfair.co.nz
