The Pleasure Principle
Hong Kong-born Cary Kwok gained an MA in Fashion Design (Womenswear) in 2001, from Central St Martins College of Art and Design. His drawings, which feature fashion, period-costumes, ethnicity and sexuality, have been exhibited internationally. VAULT spoke with the artist as he prepared for his latest exhibition, at Herald St Gallery in London.
IN 2013, I SAW THE EXHIBITION KEEP YOUR TIMBER LIMBER AT LONDON’S ICA, FEATURING YOUR EXQUISITE DRAWINGS OF EJACULATING MEN, OF VARIOUS ETHNICITIES.
Some were made for that exhibition, and some were earlier pieces. For instance, the large drawing of the blindfolded man, Blind Date Buffet, was made for my 2008 solo show
at Galerie Perrotin, Miami. And the Religious Men were shown several years ago, at Frieze with my gallery, Herald St. I enjoy drawing subjects that inspire me. The work had a message
of sexuality, racial and gender equality.
BALLPOINT PEN IS UNCONVENTIONAL IN A FINE ART CONTEXT, AND YOU ARE A MASTER OF IT.
It has been my favourite medium since the first year of secondary school, in Hong Kong. Students were encouraged
to use ballpoint pen instead of the erasable pencil used at primary school. The idea was to prepare us for the grown-up world. I quickly realised that the pen rendered very well,
