Nicole Monks: Barna (Country)

A new major commission by Yamaji/Wajarri artist Nicole Monks, Barna (Country) extends the artist’s ongoing investigation into the relationships between First Nations cultural knowledge, museum collections and institutional narratives. Working across sculpture, installation and immersive environments, Monks examines the ways objects and archives carry stories of displacement, resilience and belonging. Created specifically for Newcastle Art Gallery, Barna (Country) foregrounds the enduring connection between people, Country and cultural memory, inviting audiences to consider the role museums can play in truth-telling, reconciliation and the reimagining of postcolonial spaces. Nicole Monks: Barna (Country) runs from August 21, 2027 to February 13, 2028.
