Zahalkaworld – An Artist’s Archive
ZAHALKAWORLD – an artist’s archive is a major survey of leading Australian photo-media artist Anne Zahalka, spanning more than 4 decades of her practice and bringing together key bodies of work alongside personal and archival materials that reveal the breadth of her thinking. Renowned for her staged photographic compositions, Zahalka draws on and critiques art history and Australian visual culture, reworking familiar scenes to explore how identity and nationhood are constructed. Works such as The Bathers (1989), from the Bondi: Playground of the Pacific series exemplify this approach, reinterpreting Charles Meere’s Australian beach pattern (1940) with diverse figures to challenge idealised representations of the Australian beach. Throughout the exhibition, immersive elements invite audiences into the artist’s world, offering insight into her process and her references. Blurring the lines between archive and artwork, public and private, the exhibition reveals a practice grounded in both critical inquiry and playful image-making. Opening June 10.
