The Offbeat Sari
The Offbeat Sari makes its Australian debut at Bunjil Place Gallery, presenting a bold reappraisal of one of the world’s most enduring garments. Developed by the Design Museum in partnership with Liverpool Powerhouse, the exhibition brings together more than 50 saris by leading designers and emerging studios across India. Curated by Priya Khanchandani, it explores the sari as a site of cultural expression, resistance and reinvention. Designs by Abraham and Thakore, Raw Mango, Akaaro and NorBlackNorWhite sit alongside experimental works by HUEMN and Diksha Khanna. Couture pieces by Tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi Mukherjee further underscore the sari’s global resonance, positioning it as a dynamic form continually reshaped by contemporary practice.
