Woven Together: Undivided We Rise at Umbrella
Care and community are centred in Woven Together: Undivided We Rise, from which lasting connections have formed across the country. Curated by Gangulu woman Sabrina-Rose Toby, the exhibition emerges from a 5-day cultural exchange of 28 artists and 4 curators brought together by contemporary artist and Gail Mabo in collaboration with Freja Carmichael. It continues the growth seeded from the community that arose by presenting newly commissioned works from Aunty Rosalind Sailor, Kim Ah Sam, Clare Jaque Vasquez, Erica Muriata, Jaeda Lenoy and Michona Warria. These take shape in sculptural forms, woven vessels and a collaborative installation. The exhibition explores the dualities inherent in the continuation of weaving and community, weaving together the ancestral and contemporary, aesthetics and responsibility, practice and community, which are ultimately seen as inseparable.
Woven Together offers insights into a meeting of practices and exchange of knowledge, and crucially, it’s an invitation to a meeting of lasting connections. It is on display from the 19th September and runs until November 2, 2025 at Umbrella.
