Virtue and Virtuosity

In a time of climate crisis, the 2022 More-Than-Human Festival aims to move away from human-centric ideas in search of moments of collective clarity and optimism. The inaugural exhibition for the festival, entitled Virtue and Virtuosity, reflects on a more sombre element in our journey for hope – the prospect of a climate catastrophe with no pathways forward. The exhibition presents a picture of humanity torn between virtue and virtue signalling, between activism and apathy – a society depicted as the proverbial ‘deer in headlights’, overwhelmed by a sense of denialism and doom. The works within the exhibition embody this dichotomy through their masterful balancing of action and inaction, individualism and collective responsibility. A phenomenal line-up of artists including Camille Henrot, Helen Phillipson and Lauren Berkowitz offer poignant reflections on present-day relationships with each other, non-human species, and economical and ideological structures. Virtue and Virtuosity will run at Cement Fondu Gallery from March 12 to May 22, 2022.
