The Egg & Dart

The majority of commercial galleries in Australia are located in metropolitan areas, but one gallery is breaking the mould. The Egg & Dart located in Thirroul, between Sydney and Wollongong, has garnered a loyal collector following on the back of a roster of largely emerging artists. Thirroul was also much loved by the late Brett Whiteley, which locates the place firmly in Australian art history. In 2019 the gallery showed at both Sydney Contemporary and Auckland Art Fair and in 2020 was accepted into Melbourne Art Fair. “The global pattern of, 'centre', and, 'periphery', is being challenged by galleries that lie outside the urban centres. In our increasingly mobile and mediated world, location and potential reach is much more expansive. Contrary to the idea that artists must always (physically and/or conceptually) move towards the, 'centre', The Egg & Dart initiates projects that engage regionally and internationally – Auckland Art Fair 2019 being an example. The Egg & Dart is a focal point as well as a site of origin and a place of exchange for art and ideas. The Gallery conceptualises distance, modes of communication and the creative potential of aesthetic translation.” Forthcoming shows in 2020 include: Frank Nowlan, Georgia Spain, Nick Santoro and Henry Jock Walker.
