“2013 Designs of the Year” Nominees: By Zaha Hadid

Renowned as the first woman to receive the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, Zaha Hadid has also been repeatedly acknowledged in design categories ranging from architecture to furniture to technology (her Z-Car is on permanent display at New York’s MoMA). And it looks like 2013 will be no exception: Last week, the world-renowned architect, whose futuristic creations focus on fragmented geometry and powerful curving, was presented with the Aenne Burda Award for Creative Leadership at Munich’s DLD Conference, an event that honors female digital entrepreneurs for their visionary ideas. Prior to this, at the Design Museum in London, Hadid’s Liquid Glacial Table and the Galaxy Soho building in Beijing were nominated in two different categories for the 2013 Designs of the Year Award. Considered “the Oscars of the Design World,” the ceremony showcases the most innovative and imaginative creations from all over the world in categories including Architecture, Digital, Fashion and Furniture. Winners will be announced to the public on April 17th. The nominations will be displayed at the museum beginning March 20th.

The Galaxy Soho, Beijing

Completed in October of 2012, the Galaxy Soho serves as an office, retail and entertainment complex in central Beijing. The structure features four flowing towers that are fused or linked by stretched bridges. They adapt to each other in all directions, generating a panoramic display void of corners or abrupt transitions. The interior reflects traditional Chinese architecture with an open courtyard.

The Liquid Glacial Table

Exploring movement through space, Hadid’s Liquid Glacial Table conjures a still body of water that has been disturbed and then became static. Evident below the clear surface are waves and ripples that seem to pour through a vortex, formulating the legs. The perception of the table adapts to observers’ viewpoints, reflecting a spectrum of colors. Handmade in Italy of clear acrylic, the design was commissioned by David Gill Galleries and starts at $160,000.
