Mario Testino’s “In Your Face” at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts

For 30 years, renowned photographer Mario Testino has documented fashion and celebrities for international magazines and advertising campaigns. The Vogue and Vanity Fair photographer has captured the most iconic and provocative personalities of the age, from Madonna, Mick Jagger and Princess Diana to Gisele Bündchen, Kate Winslet, Lady Gaga and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Now, two exhibitions of Testino’s work—his first in the United States—are on display at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts: “Mario Testino: In Your Face” and “British Royal Portraits,” both of which run through February 3rd, 2013.

Illustrating his unique aesthetic and range, “Mario Testino: In Your Face” is a compilation of 122 images spanning editorial photography and personal snapshots taken from 1993 through 2012. The exhibit features pictures ranging from the silly (Gwyneth Paltrow and a skater boy) to the iconic (Madonna in Miami in 1997) to the sexy (eight photos of Kate Moss) to the utterly captivating (Josh Hartnett in mascara and smeared lipstick).

“’In Your Face’ offers visitors an exhilarating visual experience, bridging the worlds of fashion and art, while ‘British Royal Portraits’ presents a more personal look at the British royal family,” notes Malcolm Rogers, Ann and Graham Gund director of the MFA.

In addition to working for classic English brands like Burberry and shooting English superstars such as David Beckham and Kate Moss, Testino has been the British royal family’s official photographer for more than a decade. Princess Diana herself chose him for the series of images that was shot for Vanity Fair a few months before her death in 1997. An intimate selection of pictures, “British Royal Portraits” makes a fine accompaniment to the MFA’s larger show.

And if you can’t make it to Boston before the exhibits close, fear not. Pick up a copy of In Your Face ($59.99), Taschen’s new coffee-table book that accompanies the show.
