Known for his seductive and androgynous collections, French couture designer Jean Paul Gaultier has created a world that defies social and cultural boundaries. His surreal garments have been worn by music superstars from Marilyn Manson and Kylie Minogue to Madonna (JPG famously created the cone bra and other ensembles for her iconic Blonde Ambition tour). He also is a favorite of film directors, including Pedro Almodóvar, Luc Besson and Peter Greenaway, and no less than Andy Warhol deemed his creations true art. Now, a multimedia exhibition, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” is on display at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Showcasing 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs form the last 35 years as well as his collaborations with prominent filmmakers, choreographers and musicians, the exhibition also features 30 mannequins who alternately sing and talk. “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier” is on display until the 19th of August.
